For a more connected Southall, cleaner air and improved public space
Get Southall Moving (GSM) is a programme of transport and public realm investment commissioned by Ealing Council. GSM will create a healthier, better connected and more inclusive Southall. It aims to make walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport the natural choice for everyday trips. It will strengthen links to jobs, schools, parks and other destinations, and it will improve air quality, safety and the quality of public space.
Southall records Ealing borough’s highest rates of self-reported “bad or very bad” health, together with a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes and a lower life expectancy. Half of all traffic in the town centre is passing through, causing congestion and air pollution without benefitting local businesses. At the same time, rapid growth is taking place around the Elizabeth Line station, with more growth planned across the Southall Opportunity Area. The quality of public realm and the provision for cycling lag behind demand. Severance created by the railway line, canal, and major roads remains a persistent barrier to local trips being walked or cycled.
The vision is a healthier and more connected Southall. Seven principles guide delivery:
Success will look like:
These outcomes will deliver lasting health and quality of life benefits for Southall’s communities.
As set out in Ealing Council’s ‘Travel in Ealing Charter’ (TIE), the council is committed to being open, transparent, and inclusive and will work as hard as we can to engage as well as we can with the people and communities likely to be affected by the proposals we bring forward, so that the outcomes are the best they can be for as many people as possible.
The Council first consulted on GSM proposals in 2023 and published this set of findings from that consultation process. Better street lighting and more trees, plants and greenery were the two most important suggestions from respondents.
Ongoing engagement for this project will be communicated on this website and through the Commonplace platform. Commonplace is a digital community engagement tool and a means to connect the Council with residents.
